The Highland Skating Club, originally known as the Burien Skating Club, was
established in 1964 and operated out of the Burien Ice Chalet. From there it
moved to the Ballard Ice Arena until 1980 when it moved to the Highland Ice
Arena, and changed its name to Highland Skating Club. The Club’s primary
purpose is to further all aspects of the sport of figure skating. Ability is
not a criterion for membership, only the enjoyment of the sport.
The Highland Skating Club is a member of US Figure Skating, the governing body for figure skating in the United
States. US Figure Skating was formed in 1921 and is a member of the International
Skating Union (ISU) the body that governs the sport internationally. Today,
there are over 400-member clubs across the country, and every day more skaters
are registering as members of US Figure Skating.
The Highland Skating Club is also a member of the Pacific Northwest Inter-Club
Association, the regional organization whose board meets quarterly to promote
a unified skating community. The Pacific Northwest Inter-Club Association also
conducts an annual summer competition, which all US Figure Skating registered skaters, as
well as registered skaters from other countries may enter.
